In summer 2024, the compliance department of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) received a tip that uncovered years of embezzlement. An informant reported that 54-year-old former SBB manager Ueli T. had defrauded the railway of approximately nine million francs over a period of years. However, because the statute of limitations is fifteen years, only around five million francs can be recovered.

The SBB suspected nothing of the manipulations for seventeen years. The whistleblower was the suspect's former closest friend, Andreas C. His action was not entirely selfless, however. According to online media outlet Blick, the man acted out of revenge after Ueli T. had been unfaithful to him. What began as personal retaliation brought one of the largest internal fraud cases in SBB history to light. (Blick)
