The Coatti case in Colombia
Elipio Torres García and José Alfredo Díazgranados Sotelo have been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Italian biologist Alessandro Coatti, as reported by rainews.it. The crime occurred in Santa Marta, Colombia, in April 2025. The two admitted their responsibility through a plea bargain, confessing to aggravated murder, theft and concealment of a corpse.
With this sentence, the number of those identified as responsible for the crime rises to seven. In May 2026 five other people had already been convicted with sentences of up to 25 years and 10 months in prison; a sixth defendant had received two years for failing to report a crime. The investigation established that the gang used digital dating platforms to select victims. Coatti was lured to a residence under the pretence of a meeting, then robbed, beaten to death and dismembered.
