The detainee is the brother of alias Fito, extradited previously, and was hiding in Colombian territory using false documents that identified him as a citizen of that nation. This circumstance demonstrates the capacity of certain criminal groups to circumvent border control systems and establish themselves in foreign jurisdictions.
Ecuadorian judicial authorities are seeking him for his alleged involvement in money laundering activities and criminal association. His detention was made possible by an international alert issued by Interpol, known as a Red Notice, which allows different states to locate and arrest individuals fleeing justice.
The operation, named Operation Cazador, involved Ecuador's Security Bloc—comprised of agents from the National Police, personnel from the Armed Forces and staff from the National Intelligence Centre—alongside Colombian counterparts. This level of cooperation is essential when dismantling organisations that operate without regard for territorial boundaries.
Minister Reimberg used a conversation with Caracol Radio to express reservations about the anti-crime strategies promoted by Colombian President Gustavo Petro, which introduces a note of friction in bilateral relations on public security matters.
The capture constitutes an important advance against criminal networks that have gained ground in Ecuador, although it also highlights the urgent need to strengthen migration verification protocols and communication channels between the region's intelligence agencies.
