Nine members of the Gulf Clan, considered the largest criminal organisation dedicated to drug trafficking in Colombia, died during a military operation carried out by the country's armed forces. The information was disclosed by the Colombian Army last Friday.
Troops bombarded a jungle area located in Turbo, department of Antioquia (north-west), territory where the Gulf Clan operates. This action takes place within the wave of violence that has ravaged the region over the past decade.
The incident occurs in a complex political context: on 21 June, the second round of Colombia's presidential elections will be held. In that electoral contest, left-wing senator Iván Sepúlveda will face far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, who has promised relentless action against drug cartels and has the backing of the United States.
