Life sentence for double murder in Florencia following oral trial in Ciego de Ávila

The Provincial People's Court of Ciego de Ávila handed down a sentence of perpetual deprivation of liberty against a defendant for the crime of murder committed in the municipality of Florencia, according to cibercuba.com. The sentence was published on Tuesday on the court's official Facebook page, which indicated that the First Criminal Chamber resolved case number 84 of 2026 following the holding of an oral and public trial.

The institutional statement did not reveal the identity of the convicted person or the names of the victims. However, Luis Alberto Medina Vega, a Facebook profile that disseminates information about police operations in Ciego de Ávila, identified the convicted man as Adrián Cruz Díaz. According to that publication, Cruz was found guilty of the murder of his ex-partner, Marialina García Borroto, and her romantic partner, Abel Morales Castro.

Medina characterised the act as a crime of passion and noted that the court weighed the evidence presented and the gravity of the facts before imposing the maximum sentence. The number of the legal case mentioned in that publication matches that of the court's official statement, although the institution did not publicly confirm the names of those involved.

The double murder had occurred on 26 August 2025 in a dwelling in the municipality of Florencia. According to information published at the time by CubitaNOW, the victims were María Alina García and Abel Morales, attacked with a sharp weapon inside their home. Preliminary reports indicated that the woman attempted to escape but was reached by the aggressor, who returned to the dwelling afterwards and also attacked Morales, who died at the scene.

The versions circulated at that time indicated that the alleged perpetrator was the woman's ex-partner and that he had previously served a sentence for murder. At that time the authorities were searching for him after he had absconded.

The conviction comes days after another Cuban court also imposed life imprisonment on Guillermo Sánchez Gutiérrez for the murder of an auxiliary of the National Revolutionary Police in Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba. In that case, the facts occurred in July 2025 and the court considered the existence of vengeance or reprisal as an aggravating circumstance.
