Driver sentenced to 10 years for sabotage in Cárdenas after ramming state bus

The Provincial Popular Court of Havana sentenced Yuni Valdés Pérez to 10 years' deprivation of liberty for the offence of sabotage, according to tribuna.cu. The sentence was handed down on 18 September 2025 by the Chamber for Offences Against State Security.
The facts date back to 5 May 2025 in the city of Cárdenas, province of Matanzas. Valdés Pérez, a driver for Cubacar Varadero Company, intentionally struck a state bus operated by Transmetro Company following an argument with its driver.
The investigation determined that the accused was in a state of intoxication at the time of the incident and used the vehicle under his custody to ram the bus on two occasions, causing substantial material damage to public property.
In determining the sentence, the court took into account Valdés Pérez's social conduct, his personal characteristics, and the gravity of the offence, in accordance with Opinion No. 475 of the Government Council of the Supreme Popular Court.
The judicial authority stated that the decision responds to the need to preserve state security and the integrity of public property, in accordance with current legislation.
The sentence may be appealed by cassation before the corresponding Chamber of the Supreme Popular Court, by either the accused or the Public Prosecutor's Office.
