Mother and partner condemned for child abuse and neglect in Havana
The Municipal Popular Court of Arroyo Naranjo issued a sentence on 29 September 2025 in case number 84 of that year against Daima Rodríguez Núñez and Carlos Díaz González, who were found guilty of crimes against minors.
Rodríguez Núñez, mother and legal guardian of four girls aged 10, 7, 4 and 1 year, repeatedly failed in her duty of care. The three eldest received special education due to cognitive limitations. Despite state assistance, the woman failed to provide adequate food, omitted taking them to school for long periods, neglected their medical needs and, on numerous occasions, left them alone at home during the night and early morning hours.
Furthermore, the accused and her live-in partner forced the girls to beg for food and money in the streets at any time. The funds raised by the couple were used to purchase alcohol.
Díaz González took advantage of the unprotected environment to commit improper touching over the clothing of one of the girls, specifically the 7-year-old, conduct which the mother tolerated.
The court imposed 8 years of imprisonment on Rodríguez Núñez for corruption of minors and acts against their normal development. Díaz González received 10 years for corruption of minors and indecent assault. As complementary measures, parental rights were suspended from the mother over her daughters, and both convicts were imposed restrictions on rights and prohibition from leaving the country.
The sentence may be appealed by the parties. During the trial, procedural guarantees were respected and the legislation in force at the time of the facts was applied, as it was more favourable to the accused.
