A court in the Cuban capital sentenced seven officials of the Electric Company and fourteen users from the Plaza de la Revolución municipality following a criminal trial. The defendants were found responsible for falsifying banking and commercial documents, as well as repeated bribery, all related to irregular handling of the energy service.
According to Periódico Invasor, the scheme consisted of modifying data through the company's digital commercial management system, thereby fictitiously reducing the actual consumption charges of customers with high usage.
The list of those convicted included the provincial manager of the system, a computer specialist at the company, employees of the Commercial Office in Plaza, inspectors and bill collectors. The ringleaders were sentenced to between six and eight years in prison. Other participants, including users who benefited from the fraud, received monetary and administrative penalties commensurate with their role.
The ruling shows corruption within the state electricity entity and the collaboration of private individuals in the unlawful use of the service.
