Two men died on Wednesday, 4 February in a violent incident recorded on Águila Street, between Reina and Estrella, in the municipality of Centro Habana, according to reporting by Google News CU — Havana. The incident occurred in broad daylight in the public thoroughfare and was filmed by eyewitnesses.
In videos circulating on social media, a first man is seen lying on the tarmac next to a bicycle, whilst several people around him alert others that he had been murdered. Minutes later, a second individual died in the same place after being attacked by several people, allegedly in reaction to the first crime.
The images were shared by Cuban opposition figure José Daniel Ferrer, who noted on social media that the incident could be linked to drug consumption or trafficking in the area.
As of the time this report was published, Cuban authorities had not issued any statement about what occurred, providing no details about the identity of the victims, the exact circumstances of the double homicide or any possible arrests.
The incident generated numerous reactions on social media, where users expressed shock and concern about insecurity in central areas of the capital.
Rising insecurity according to independent observatory
The incident adds to a series of violent incidents documented by the independent press in a context marked by the absence of up-to-date official statistics on crime in Cuba.
According to the 2025 Public Insecurity Report by the Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC), public insecurity in Cuba experienced a significant increase during that year: 2,833 verified reports of criminal incidents were recorded, an increase of 115.11 per cent compared to 2024 and of 336.58 per cent compared to 2023.
Among the most notable elements of the report is the expansion of drug-related crimes, which totalled 437 reports in 2025 — a category analysed independently for the first time. According to the document, these activities include production, sale and consumption, and are concentrated mainly in Havana, Granma and Holguín, with particular impact on young people and vulnerable sectors.
The report recorded 152 homicides, 8.98 per cent fewer than in 2024 and 22.84 per cent fewer than in 2023. Nevertheless, the social impact remains high: 173 people died violently during the year, including 48 women who were victims of femicide.
