Johnny Luis Quevedo Inza, accused of brutally assaulting his two-year-old stepson in Holguín, surrendered to authorities and remains in detention, according to diariodecuba.com based on posts from the independent profile NiO Reportando Un Crimen, confirmed by the local official profile Cazador Cazado.
The case came to public attention when NiO Reportando Un Crimen published a complaint describing how Quevedo Inza allegedly beat the child violently and subsequently placed him in a water tank, circumstances that the source characterised as an "attempt on his life".
The child was transferred to Octavio de la Concepción y de la Pedraja Paediatric Hospital in Holguín. Recent posts contradict versions claiming the child had died: the child remains alive, although in serious condition. Cazador Cazado stated, according to one of its collaborators, that his life was not in danger; the update from NiO, however, still describes him in serious condition.
The same social media posts suggest that another child, around four years old, may also have suffered alleged abuse. This matter, like the exact circumstances of the assault, will need to be clarified through an official investigation.
NiO Reportando Un Crimen added that sources close to the case maintain that Quevedo Inza had recently been released from prison after serving a sentence related to an assault with a bladed weapon. This information has not been officially confirmed.
Authorities had been searching for him since his photograph circulated on social media. The profile had asked anyone who could recognise him not to attempt to detain him themselves and to alert the police.
Pattern of child violence documented in several provinces
The arrest comes in a context of increasing circulation of complaints about violence against minors in Cuba, amid scarce public information offered by authorities on ongoing investigations and criminal proceedings.
In April, a woman was arrested in Sancti Spíritus accused of physical abuse of her three underage children—one of them three years old—and her own mother. At the end of 2025, Holguín authorities confirmed that Elizabeth González Díaz and her partner, Diosdado González Martínez, were charged with child abuse following the circulation of a video in which the woman beats her ten-year-old daughter.
Despite the Cuban Government having promoted reforms such as the Code of Families (2022) and the Code of Childhood (2025), experts warn that reality falls short of the proclaimed legal framework.
Lawyer Maylín Fernández Suris has questioned the effectiveness of these standards: "The true test for any child protection law is not its wording, but its capacity to prevent a child from suffering violence, negligence or abandonment". In an analysis published in DIARIO DE CUBA, Fernández Suris noted that the proliferation of cases evidences "grave structural failures", including the absence of effective detection protocols, the ineffectiveness of preventive mechanisms and the persistence of minors in violent environments despite previous complaints.
