Seven-year-old girl murdered in Havana; Public Prosecutor charges neighbour with child femicide

Havana Public Prosecutor's Office investigates murder of minor in Chibás neighbourhood
Gabriela Herrera Rodríguez, seven years old, was murdered on 21 March in the Chibás neighbourhood, Guanabacoa municipality, Havana. According to cibercuba.com, her body was found in the vicinity of the neighbourhood bearing signs of extreme violence and possible evidence of other assaults.
The girl had left her home in the late afternoon of that same day and did not return. Her mother organised a search with family members and neighbours; as night fell, the body was discovered near the home of the alleged attacker. The independent outlet Alas Tensas described details of the discovery.
The main suspect is a neighbour from the same neighbourhood where Gabriela lived. He was detained in Guanabacoa following discovery of the body. The Havana Provincial Public Prosecutor's Office imposed the precautionary measure of provisional custody.
Official investigation and Prosecutor's Office oversight
The Havana Provincial Public Prosecutor's Office issued an official statement confirming that it is investigating a murder that occurred on 21 March in the Guiteras neighbourhood—known as Bahía—in Havana Este municipality, whose victim is also a minor. The criminal proceedings are being handled by the Interior Ministry's bodies, and the Prosecutor's Office exercises direct oversight of the investigation.
"In accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Law, the Prosecutor's Office secured the precautionary measure of provisional custody for the accused, a Cuban national, who was unemployed at the time of the facts. Investigative steps are being taken to produce evidence," states the official statement.
The General Public Prosecutor's Office added that "it shall exercise public criminal action before the Court for trial, with a request for severe sanctions commensurate with the gravity of the facts and the circumstances in which they occurred."
Cibercuba.com notes that it has been unable to confirm whether the Prosecutor's Office's official statement refers to the same case as Gabriela Herrera Rodríguez or to another minor murdered on the same day in a different municipality in Havana.
Classified as child femicide
Organisations monitoring gender-based violence in Cuba classified Gabriela's case as child femicide, occurring within a context of sexist violence, abuse, and extreme vulnerability. The girl's prior disappearance, her family's desperate search, and the circumstances surrounding discovery of her body are elements considered typical of this type of crime.
Gabriela's murder is not an isolated incident. Just days earlier, Katherine Cruz Aguilera, aged 14, had been murdered in Las Tunas.
Context of public insecurity
Independent reports document 1,319 crimes registered in Cuba, a figure that quintuples records from previous years, according to cibercuba.com. Human rights organisations point to the absence of effective prevention and protection policies as a factor that worsens the situation of vulnerability, particularly among women and minors.
