Extensive police checks in urban areas have resulted in the arrest of 19 people and hundreds of traffic violations recorded during a single night.

Nineteen people were arrested and more than 290 breaches of the Road Traffic Code were recorded when police forces conducted extensive checks in urban centres across the island during the night shift.
According to reporting from Philenews, authorities stopped 606 vehicles for inspection and identified 858 occupants. At the same time, 46 searches were carried out in shops and public reception areas, resulting in seven additional violations.
The arrested individuals are accused of various criminal offences. These include charges of possession of prohibited substances, theft, grievous bodily harm, public intoxication and causing a breach of the peace, whilst some drivers were found to be driving with alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit.
Of the violations recorded on the road network, 112 concerned excessive speed. Twenty-four drivers were found to have consumed alcohol before driving. A further person tested positive for psychotropic substances. Breathalyser tests conducted reached 352, whilst corresponding checks for drugs amounted to ten.
In seventeen cases vehicles were impounded from their owners. In addition, twenty-four traffic cases were placed under investigation.
The targeted operations by the prosecuting authorities to combat violations and ensure the safety of citizens continue uninterrupted, with increased presence on the roads and immediate intervention where necessary.
