Investigators from Athens examine evidence on 'Mafia State' in Cyprus
A five-member team of investigators from Greece has arrived in Cyprus and has already begun working on material that emerged from the Anti-Corruption Authority report, known as the "Mafia State" case. The Cabinet approved the appointment of the team, which is housed at the "Philoxenia" conference centre.
The mission of the team is to determine whether the conclusions of the report fall within the provisions of the Penal Code. The deadline set for completion of the investigation is six months.
The findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority had provoked strong reactions, as they identified significant gaps in the functioning of state mechanisms and suggested possible illegal acts. The investigators from Athens are now called upon to assess the material and determine whether offences are constituted.
The presence of the Greek investigators is expected to increase pressure on the local authorities for full clarification of the cases that emerged.
