Independent criminal investigators for the "State-Mafia" case
A five-member team of independent criminal investigators will examine the conclusions of the report by the Independent Authority Against Corruption regarding the case that became known as the "State-Mafia" case. The decision was taken by the Cabinet at its meeting on Thursday, chaired by President Nicos Christodoulides, as announced by government spokesperson Constantinos Letympiotes.
The appointment was made under the relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Law. Mr Letympiotes emphasised that the decision respects the Constitution, the rule of law and the competencies of independent institutions, with the aim of conducting a comprehensive, impartial and transparent investigation into the matters contained in the report.
The term of office of the investigators was set at six months, with the possibility of extension if a substantiated request is submitted to the Cabinet. Furthermore, it was decided to provide the team with the necessary personnel, office space and equipment for the unimpeded performance of its duties.
The government spokesperson stressed that this move reflects the commitment of the executive power to transparency and accountability, while at the same time strengthening public confidence in the institutions, with full respect for the independence of the judiciary and the presumption of innocence.
