Police authorities are investigating an online fraud case involving a 31-year-old man who lost an amount totalling one hundred thousand euros. The case was recently reported and concerns deception via a digital currency platform.
The victim searched the internet, using a specialised application, for ways to convert money into cryptocurrency. During this search, he received contact from a person who remained anonymous. This person directed him to a digital currency exchange point in the city of Limassol.
The complainant visited the shop accompanied by an acquaintance and handed over the sum of €100,000. The aim was to transfer it to a digital wallet that had been suggested to him. However, later he discovered that he had fallen victim to fraud, as the money had never been credited to the account he had requested.
Investigations revealed that one day before the transaction, an unknown person had contacted the shop manager. This person claimed that his associates would visit the location to deposit €100,000, which would need to be converted into digital currency and sent to a specific electronic wallet.
The shop manager, after receiving the money from the 31-year-old, allegedly carried out the transaction following the instructions of the unknown sender. The prosecution authorities are now examining the role of all those involved and the possibility that the manager knew of or participated in the deception.
