An unknown person impersonating a representative of a financial services website persuaded a citizen to install programmes on his mobile phone, obtaining thousands of euros from him.

A citizen fell victim to an online fraud, with the perpetrator obtaining €9,142 from his bank account. The incident was reported to police at the capital's Crime Department the day before yesterday.
According to the complaint, on 18 June the victim received a telephone call from a man. The unknown caller claimed to work for an electronic payments and financial transactions website. Using false pretexts concerning the security of the citizen's online profile, he persuaded him to download specific software onto his smartphone, along with other money transfer applications.
After the citizen followed the fraudster's instructions, the sum of €9,142 disappeared from his account.
The investigation is being conducted by the specialised financial crimes unit of Nicosia Police Directorate.
Following this case, the prosecution authorities have issued a warning to the general public. They emphasise that no one should allow strangers to gain access to their mobile phones, computers or electronic accounts. Personal data and banking information must remain confidential and should never be disclosed.
Citizens should always verify the identity of those calling or messaging them. Any verification should be carried out exclusively through the official communication channels of the relevant organisations.
