Fraudsters contacted a citizen by telephone, claiming his bank account had been compromised, and stole €24,800.
Telephone fraud: €24,800 stolen from citizen's account
Police are investigating a new case of electronic fraud involving a large sum of money, following a complaint filed with Nicosia TAE. The Economic Crime Investigation Unit has taken on the investigation.
According to what the victim reported, on 19 May he received a call from unknown individuals who told him that his account on an electronic payment platform had been compromised, as well as his bank account. The perpetrators asked the citizen to give them the access codes to his online bank account, claiming that this way they would prevent the alleged intruders.
The victim was convinced and revealed his details. Immediately afterwards, the fraudsters stole €24,800 from his bank account.
Following the incident, police are warning the public to be particularly careful. Personal information, banking details and access codes to online accounts should never be disclosed to anyone. Citizens are urged to verify any calls or messages they receive through official and recognised communication channels of the organisations involved.
