Cypriot authorities are conducting an investigation into threatening messages sent on Saturday to two locations in Nicosia: the Nicosia Mall shopping centre and the Cyprus Centre for Middle Eastern Studies (KEMA). The messages prompted an immediate police response on Saturday afternoon, with officers dispatched to both locations to conduct security checks in accordance with established procedures.
In a statement, police said precautionary measures were taken and personnel remained at the locations throughout the duration of the investigations.
Police spokesman Byron Byronis told Cyprus Mail on Monday that authorities received multiple threatening messages, some of which were also directed at the media, as well as to the shopping centre in Paphos.
"In accordance with our protocols, specific checks were carried out. Because many messages were sent, including to the media and Paphos shopping centre, we assessed that evacuation was not necessary," he stated.
Officers have now identified a young person as the alleged suspect. "We have identified a young person as the alleged suspect and the investigation is ongoing," Byronis added.
