Attempted femicide in Limassol: Motives of 55-year-old police officer under investigation
An ongoing police investigation is examining an incident of violent assault that occurred on the morning of Tuesday at a residence in Zakaki, Limassol. The victim is a 46-year-old woman, wife of a 55-year-old police officer, who is alleged to have shot her and then attempted to take his own life.
Investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events, both of the fateful day and of the preceding days. A key question is whether the perpetrator's action was premeditated or the result of a momentary outburst.
The investigation is focusing on serious financial difficulties that the couple was facing. According to information, the financial problems were connected to gambling, whilst their relationship had deteriorated in recent times. It is also being investigated whether a significant sum of money that the woman had recently acquired from her work sparked the confrontation.
Contradictory accounts have emerged from the 55-year-old's professional environment. Some colleagues reported that he displayed no unusual behaviour, whilst other sources mention recent difficulties related to involvement with gambling. A senior police officer is reported to have met with the 55-year-old a few days before the incident, with the aim of advising and warning him, based on information that had reached the police leadership. The meeting was largely informal and advisory in nature.
The son-in-law of the 46-year-old posted on social media that his mother-in-law continues to live and is fighting the most important battle of her life. He dismissed rumours about financial matters or involvement of third parties, emphasising that only the family knows what happened within the home. He stated that his mother had long suffered psychological abuse, intimidation and restriction of her personal freedom, and called on the public to respect their privacy.
For its part, the police have repeatedly stated that they had not received any complaints or reports of domestic violence incidents concerning the specific couple.
