The anti-narcotics unit YKAN has dismantled a ring that imported and distributed opiates across Cyprus. Approximately 60 kilogrammes were seized, 21 people were arrested and two remain wanted.

The anti-narcotics unit YKAN announced on Saturday that it had dismantled a drugs ring operating across the whole of Cyprus that imported and distributed opiate substances.
As part of the investigation, authorities seized approximately 60 kilogrammes of opiates and investigated a total of 17 related cases. Twenty-one people were arrested, while two others remain at large.
According to police, 16 of the 17 cases have already been filed before court and referred to the Criminal Court for trial. The 21 defendants are being held in pre-trial detention.
During the investigation, evidence was obtained against three of the defendants, according to which they are said to have imported additional quantities of poppy seeds into Cyprus over the past three months. They face additional charges.
As part of measures to restrict the importation of this type of drug, YKAN contacted a foreign company through which parcels containing the seized quantities were being sent to Cyprus.
The company has since implemented the relevant measures to prevent the possibility of sending these specific products to Cyprus.
The operation includes recent seizures of opiates by police, which ranged from 2 to 30 kilogrammes.
