Themistoklis Arnaoutis, the head of Cyprus's police force, stated that his service is awaiting a decision from the Cabinet. The decision concerns the appointment of independent criminal investigators, who will examine the findings of the Independent Authority Against Corruption regarding the book "Mafia State".
The statement was made during a press briefing at police headquarters, which was organised to present the results of the Crime Prevention Service for the first half of the current year.
According to Mr Arnaoutis, the Police has already received the report, accompanying documents and a list of evidence that was transmitted via the Office of the Attorney General. This material is now available to the relevant services for further use.
The Police Chief stressed that a concurrent investigation by the Police into the same case cannot be conducted. As he said, the progress of the case depends on decisions that will be made at government level. "We are holding it and waiting for instructions on the procedure to be followed," he stated, adding that the Police's assistance will be very important.
The book "Mafia State" has provoked significant political reactions in Cyprus, with references to links between organised crime and persons holding positions of power. The Independent Authority Against Corruption had conducted a related investigation, the findings of which are now at a stage of evaluation.
