On Tuesday morning, a 55-year-old police officer ended his life near Agios Spyridon Secondary School in Zakaki. Shortly before, he had attacked his 46-year-old wife with the intention of killing her.

The woman remains in an Intensive Care Unit at a private clinic in Limassol. Investigators from Limassol's Crime Investigation Department are waiting for her condition to stabilise so they can record her account. They are hoping to obtain answers from her about what preceded the incident.

Law enforcement personnel are gathering evidence to reconstruct the timeline of the tragedy. Security camera footage from the area is being examined, whilst statements from acquaintances and relatives of the couple are being recorded.

The authorities have clarified that the investigation is ongoing and that no further statements will be made until the procedures are completed. Any premature announcement could hinder the work of the investigators.

At the same time, discussion has been rekindled regarding the psychological care of police officers. Stella Katsarhi, Vice-President of the Cyprus Psychologists' Association, stressed the need to establish a permanent framework for continuous monitoring and psychological support that would serve preventative purposes.

The Police Service has a dedicated personnel support unit with registered mental health specialists, which provides counselling support and organises educational and preventative programmes.
