During large-scale traffic checks across Cyprus, a police officer was injured in Ayia Napa when a young driver attempted to escape. The incident occurred in the early hours when law enforcement personnel stopped a vehicle for inspection. The 23-year-old reversed at dizzying speed, striking an officer and subsequently colliding with a parked vehicle.
An alcohol test showed a concentration of 75% in his system, far exceeding the maximum permitted limit of 9%. The young man was arrested and remanded in custody. The injured officer was transported by ambulance to Famagusta hospital, where he received medical care and was discharged. The local police station is conducting an investigation.
In another incident in Paphos, officers from Squad Z detected a vehicle exhibiting dangerous driving behaviour following a report. The 29-year-old driver recorded a reading of 97 microgrammes per 100 ml, far exceeding the limit. He was also arrested and remanded in custody, with Paphos Traffic Police handling the case.
During the night, 291 breathalyser tests were conducted across the island. Thirty people were found to be driving with alcohol in their blood and were banned from the roads. In addition, ten preliminary drug tests yielded six positive samples. In total, 36 people lost their driving rights that night.
Law enforcement authorities emphasise that drunk driving remains a leading cause of serious and fatal traffic accidents.
