A 55-year-old police officer opened fire on his 46-year-old wife inside a car near a school in Limassol, and immediately afterwards fatally wounded himself. The incident took place yesterday morning in the Zakaki area, in the presence of an eyewitness.
A passer-by who was heading to work noticed voices coming from the vehicle at around 6:35. When he approached, he saw the man holding the woman by the neck. The passer-by stopped to help, but the perpetrator drew a revolver, threatened to shoot him, and then shot his wife four times. He then turned the weapon on himself.
The woman was transported by ambulance to a private hospital in the city. Despite the bullets she received, she still showed signs of life upon arrival. She is in an intensive care unit, intubated, with her condition deemed extremely serious. A call was made for blood donations from the Blood Centre.
The 55-year-old worked at the port station of the Marina of Saint Raphael. That morning he took his service weapon, told his colleagues he would be away for a few minutes, and left. It appears he was waiting for his wife outside Saint Spyridon High School, where she worked nearby.
According to information from the authorities, the couple had disagreements in recent times, mainly of a financial nature. The head of police in Limassol, Stelios Aristeidou, stated that there had been no previous complaints against him. Investigators are examining images from security cameras and taking statements from relatives and witnesses.
The Commissioner for Gender Equality, Tzozie Christodoulou, commented that the incident is yet another tragic reminder of violence against women and stressed the need for effective prevention and protection.
