Violent altercation between foreigners in Xylophagou: Three in custody, eight sought
Three men of Syrian origin are being held by Cypriot authorities following a violent incident that occurred in a village in Famagusta province, while eight other people of the same origin are being sought after they disappeared from their homes.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening in the Xylophagou community. According to statements given by those present, approximately twenty people were involved in a clash using sticks, hammers and various sharp objects. During the incident, one of those involved attempted to run over people from the opposing side with his vehicle, resulting in the vehicle crashing into a neighbouring building.
Police forces were notified at 9:40 in the evening. When they arrived at the scene, those involved had already fled, but left evidence behind them. Among the items found were the vehicle that was used, hammers, batons and sticks, which are being sent for laboratory analysis.
A day later, a 27-year-old was arrested on a court warrant. Yesterday afternoon, at 6:30, police officers apprehended two more people, aged 20 and 30. All three detainees are expected to appear before the Famagusta District Court for the issue of detention orders.
According to Philenews, the prosecuting authorities have issued eight arrest warrants against Syrians residing in Larnaca. However, upon inspection of their residences it was established that they had left their homes. Among those who fled is the 30-year-old owner of the vehicle who is alleged to have attempted to run over foreigners.
The investigation by Xylophagou Police, in cooperation with the Famagusta Detective Department, continues. The clash is reportedly the result of financial differences between groups of people from Syria.
