Fifteen months' prison for teacher over indecent assault on underage pupil
The District Court in Larnaca sentenced a teacher to fifteen months' imprisonment following a hearing. The man was found guilty of indecent assault and abuse of a minor in relation to a pupil who attended his school.
The incident that led to the prosecution took place in September 2021 at a secondary school unit in the district. The court found the complainant's testimony credible; she was fourteen years old at the time of the incident. The judges concluded that the teacher committed indecent touching on the minor's chest without her consent, exceeding the permissible bounds of pedagogical contact.
In their judgment, the judges emphasised that the defendant's conduct constituted exploitation of the relationship of trust governing teacher and pupil. They rejected the defence's arguments.
The judge imposed fifteen months for abuse and nine months for indecent assault, with both sentences to be served concurrently. The case was brought to trial by prosecutor Eleftheria Giakoumetti.
The prosecution is considering appealing the judgment, believing the sentences are plainly lenient. An appeal is also expected from the convicted man.
The same individual had previously engaged the courts. In an earlier case, the same court had sentenced him to twelve months for similar offences against another pupil, but the Court of Appeal unanimously acquitted him on 19 November 2019.
