Trial in superior court for couple accused of vehicle fires
A 41-year-old woman and a 19-year-old youth were committed for trial from the Paphos District Court to the Assize Court of the same city. The two arrested persons have remained in custody since mid-April, when they were apprehended following a police pursuit that began in the Famagusta district and ended in the capital.
The charges they face include conspiracy to commit a serious offence, exposing motor vehicles to fire, attempted arson, as well as money laundering from unlawful acts.
The incident began when police officers patrolling the Paphos area spotted the two approaching a building. In their hands they were holding a bottle and an object resembling a club. As soon as they noticed the presence of the authorities, they boarded their vehicle and attempted to escape, driving recklessly and causing a collision with police cars.
They managed to enter the motorway towards Limassol and temporarily get away. Their vehicle, which bore false registration plates, was found later in a village outside Nicosia. The older of the two was located inside a residence, whilst his accomplice was walking along a nearby dirt road. During his arrest, the 19-year-old allegedly attacked a police officer, striking him in the face.
The prosecution authorities link the couple to at least four incidents: two cases of vehicle fires in Paphos, an attempted arson in the same city, and another act of arson in Larnaca.
