Lawyer Achilleas Dimitriadis expressed serious reservations about the legitimacy of Christos Mylonopoulou's participation in the independent investigative team examining allegations from the book 'Mafia State'.
In statements to KYPE, Mr Dimitriadis stressed that Mr Mylonopoulou had previously undertaken the legal defence of Michalis Zolota in the Focus case, which is the subject of investigation by the Committee. "You cannot restrict conflict of interest to one of the five charges, because the problem is widespread," he said.
According to him, the fact that Mr Mylonopoulou was counsel for one of the accused in the Focus case "contaminates his right to say that he is independent". He added that this situation creates "a legal impediment to the independence" of the investigative team.
Mr Dimitriadis also noted that the role of criminal investigators serves two purposes: the preparation of the criminal file and the restoration of public confidence in the system of administration. "But even if I am wrong in this analysis, there is no doubt that people are shaken by this type of legalistic approach to conflict of interest and the purpose of restoring confidence in the system is not achieved," he said.
