Increased citizen reports of false telephone calls and messages mimicking payment services have led to a new warning from Cyprus Police. The cyber-crime unit issued a statement following a report from a resident about a suspicious call, in which the unknown caller claimed that approximately €200 would be deducted from the resident's account.
According to Cyprus Mail, the authorities have been receiving similar reports in recent months and regularly issue notifications to raise public awareness. The fraudsters aim to deceive recipients into opening links or disclosing personal and financial information.
The Police recommend that citizens enable two-factor authentication on all their online accounts, check connected devices on their profiles, and regularly review the personal information they maintain on social media platforms.
Furthermore, the use of strong and unique passwords for each account is recommended, as well as their regular change. Any suspicious communication, message or link should be forwarded to the authorities for investigation and blocking. Investigations are continuing to identify and deactivate the malicious links used in these frauds.
