Attorney General Giorgos Savvides and his Deputy Savas Angelides have decided to recuse themselves from handling the report of the Authority against Corruption regarding the book "Mafia State".

An extraordinary Judicial Council was convened today by Attorney General Giorgos Savvides, with the aim of assigning other prosecutorial officials to evaluate the report of the Authority against Corruption concerning the book by Makarios Drusiotis "Mafia State".
According to an announcement from the Legal Service, the head of the prosecution and his deputy Savas Angelides chose not to become personally involved in the case. The former stated that he is withdrawing due to close acquaintance and friendship with former President Nicos Anastasiades, in order to preserve neutrality. A similar decision was made by Mr Angelides.
Elena Kleopa, head of the Criminal Law Division at the Legal Service, will also be excluded from the proceedings, as she had been called to testify as a witness during the investigation by inspectors of the Authority against Corruption.
This particular body was activated for the first time in 2015 under then-Attorney General Kostas Klerides, in the case of former deputy Rikko Erotokritos. The latter had filed complaints against Klerides. Former President Anastasiades had then responded that the matter did not fall within his competence but rather that of the Attorney General. This had troubled Klerides, who assigned other prosecutorial officials to take on the case, thereby creating the informal Judicial Council.
