Two distinguished Greek judges have been appointed by the Cypriot government to investigate the findings of the Authority Against Corruption.
Greek lawyers take on investigation into 'Mafia State' corruption scandal
The government of Cyprus has proceeded with the appointment of two Greek experts to handle the findings compiled by the Independent Authority Against Corruption in the case commonly referred to as the "Mafia State".
The two selected individuals are Vassilios Skouris and Christos Mylonopoulos. Both have long careers in the field of legal science and criminal justice.
Skouris held the presidency of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in Luxembourg for twelve years, from 2003 to 2015. In Greece, he served as acting minister of the interior during the years 1989 and 1996. Later, in 2017, he took over as head of FIFA's ethics committee, with responsibility for overseeing transparency and professional conduct in football. Today he is an emeritus professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Mylonopoulos is an emeritus professor of criminal law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He has founded and directs the Institute of European and International Criminal Law, and is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts based in Salzburg. Cyprus University has awarded him the title of honorary doctor.
The decision of the Cabinet is part of efforts for full clarification of the alleged irregularities described in the relevant findings.
