Murder investigation launched after body of student discovered in Larnaca
A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of a male body in Larnaca district last weekend, believed to belong to a student from Bangladesh who had gone missing over a week ago.
"There is evidence that personal items found at the scene belong to the abducted student," police stated to Cyprus Mail.
On Sunday, police arrested a 22-year-old suspect on the basis of a court warrant.
"During interrogation, the arrested person is alleged to have confessed to guilt in both the kidnapping case and the murder of the abducted person," police reported.
The suspect led investigators to a specific area of Larnaca district, where the body of a man and a knife were found. The arrested person claimed the knife was the murder weapon.
The area was cordoned off for further investigation, and a coroner and police officers were called to the scene.
Upon examination, it was established that the body bore wounds from a sharp object.
According to police, various belongings of the victim were found at the scene and there is evidence that the body belongs to the missing student.
The 22-year-old student, Shahruar Ahmed Emon from Bangladesh, is alleged to have been abducted in Larnaca after leaving his home in Oroklini to start work at a local factory on 12 June.
He later sent a message with his location to a friend and a message to his father asking for help, before communication was cut off.
The student's father subsequently received, according to reports, several calls and a ransom demand from an unknown person who was asking for money in exchange for his son's release.
Investigations into the case are continuing.
