Police investigations are underway concerning findings by the Audit Service relating to the Prison Service, according to Philenews. The findings raise suspicions of collaboration between doctors and members of staff, with the aim of issuing medical certificates exceeding the legal limit of 42 days.
Police Spokesman Vyronas Vyronos characterised the case as "very serious", emphasising that a large volume of statements needs to be taken. "It could take months to complete the investigative procedure," said Mr Vyronos.
According to the spokesman, investigative authorities received instructions some time ago to investigate the possible commission of criminal offences, on the basis of the Audit Service's report, and investigations are already underway.
When asked about the possibility of examining digital data from the systems used by the doctors involved, Mr Vyronos assured that the Police would request whatever is deemed necessary for the investigation. However, he refrained from providing further details, so as not to affect the course of the investigations.
Should criminal offences be substantiated through the investigative procedure, the Police will refer the case to the Legal Service, according to Mr Vyronos.
