The leadership of the Legal Service and the head of criminal law withdraw from the Anti-Corruption Authority's report due to conflict of interest. The Prosecutors' Council takes over the handling.
Attorney-General and Deputy Attorney-General withdraw from "Mafia State" report
The first and second in the hierarchy of the Legal Service decided not to participate in the process of evaluating the Anti-Corruption Authority's report on the "Mafia State". With them, the head of criminal law at the Legal Service, who had testified as a witness during the investigation, is also excluded from the process.
According to an official announcement, the head of the Legal Service decided not to deal with any decision regarding the report, as he maintains a personal relationship and friendship with the former President of the Republic. The second in line took a similar step to protect objectivity.
The head of criminal law had been called to testify before the inspectors on one aspect of the case, and is therefore excluded from the continuation.
Because of the above decisions, the head of the Legal Service urgently convened the Prosecutors' Council, which comprises senior officials of the Service. The Council undertook to examine and handle the report, as well as to decide on any further action.
The Anti-Corruption Authority had informed the head of the Legal Service that it could not deliver the report before Monday. Nevertheless, the Legal Service deemed it appropriate to announce its decisions before receiving it.
