A 46-year-old woman remains in critical condition in hospital following a shooting carried out by her husband, a police officer with the harbour police force, who subsequently ended his own life. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning outside a municipal school, as the victim was heading to work.
According to the police, the officer reported to his unit early in the morning, collected his service weapon and informed his colleagues that he would be absent for a few minutes. The shooting took place at approximately 6:35 a.m. Investigators are examining the sequence of events that led to the couple meeting at that specific location, whilst among the lines of inquiry are personal and financial reasons.
The newspaper Politis reported that psychological examinations are not required for police officers to possess service weapons. The procedure for issuing weapons is based exclusively on a certificate of competency issued by a director of the MMAD, and does not include psychological screening. Police officers must undergo re-evaluation every five years. Should a medical report establish that a police officer is unfit to possess a weapon due to mental or physical illness, the chief of police must be informed immediately.
