Buğra Nil Kaptan, who had been in a coma since 19 September after ingesting seven grams of cocaine to avoid detection by police, has been declared brain dead.
According to Cyprus Today, the 38-year-old was being treated in the intensive care unit of Gazimağusa State Hospital. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to Nicosia State Hospital on Tuesday, where doctors announced the tragic news. Her family decided to donate her organs.
Meanwhile, police arrested a person accused of supplying the cocaine. The suspect, with the initials HM, supplied seven grams of the substance to a third party, known as AY. Kaptan consumed the drugs to avoid detection of the couple by police during a traffic control in Gazimağusa on 18 September.
The arrest of HM was made in Nicosia following examination of footage from security cameras at Zagato restaurant in Gazimağusa. Police sergeant Necip Samancı told the court that HM confessed to possession of drugs and made a voluntary statement, admitting that he sold the cocaine to AY for 450 Turkish lire.
Video footage from the restaurant showed AY and Kaptan heading together to the toilets after HM left the premises. HM was detained for three days and at a second hearing on Wednesday the judge ordered an extension of his detention for a further two days. Two more individuals are still being sought in connection with the incident.
