A 76-year-old woman in Limassol lost €42,500 through a telephone scam. An unknown man persuaded her to click on a link that emptied her bank account.
Woman aged 76 in Limassol loses €42,500 to telephone scammer
A 76-year-old woman from Limassol lost €42,500 after falling victim to a telephone scam, police announced on Monday. According to Cyprus Mail, the woman reported that earlier that same day she received a call from an unknown man speaking English who presented himself as a payment services official.
The caller claimed there were allegedly security issues with the victim's bank account and persuaded her to open a link that was sent to her via text message on her mobile phone. After opening the link, the woman discovered that €42,500 had been withdrawn from her account.
Police reminded the public that legitimate organisations never ask for bank details, codes or personal information over the telephone or via text messages. The authorities also advised the public not to open links sent via SMS, messaging applications or email from unknown sources.
