Two individuals, aged 19 and 20, were arrested yesterday in Limassol following a vehicle pursuit accompanied by gunfire, traffic violations and an assault against police officers, according to Philenews.

At around 10:40 in the morning, members of the Bicycle Patrol attempted to stop a white van driving without a front registration plate for inspection. The driver initially complied, but then suddenly accelerated towards the police officers, placing them in immediate danger.

The vehicle then continued on its way in a dangerous manner: it ran red lights and other traffic signals, ignored junctions and collided with parked cars. Police officers fired warning shots to immobilise the van.

The driver stopped momentarily, however accelerated again and headed towards the police officers for a second time. During the subsequent chase, both the driver and passenger are reported to have thrown objects at the police vehicles, resulting in the windscreen of one of them breaking.

The van's journey ended when the vehicle crashed into a traffic light and came to a halt. As police officers approached, the two occupants are reported to have assaulted them, resulting in their arrest at the scene. Following the investigation that ensued, a knife was found in the possession of the 19-year-old driver, who also faces a charge of carrying a knife.

Two police officers were injured during the chase and were transferred to Limassol General Hospital, where they received first aid and were released.

The two arrested individuals are being held for investigation purposes and are expected to appear before the Limassol District Court for the issue of a remand order. The investigation continues by the Limassol CAT and Limassol Traffic Police.
