Christodoulides on "Mafia State": Full investigation within constitutional framework

Christodoulides: "We will do what is necessary" regarding the corruption findings

The government will act on the basis of statements from the Legal Service and always within the limits of the Constitution for a full investigation of the matter, stated the President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides. According to Philenews, the President spoke on the sidelines of an inauguration in Analyontas, referring to the findings of the Independent Authority against Corruption.

"We await the findings to be delivered to the Legal Service, to be examined and for the next decisions to be announced," said Christodoulides. As the executive authority, he added, "we will do what is necessary for a full investigation of this particular matter".

The President emphasised that his government is "absolutely committed to transparency, accountability and the need to strengthen citizens' trust in institutions". He clarified, however, that any action will be taken after the relevant statements from the Legal Service are completed, "institutionally and as provided for by the relevant legislation".

When asked about the request for recusal of the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General from the examination of the matter — a request that had been submitted by both the former President of the Republic and Makarios Drousiotis — Christodoulides avoided commenting directly. "We await the statements from the Legal Service," he repeated, assuring the Cypriot people that "we will do what is necessary always within the Constitution, within the relevant legislation".
