A 46-year-old man from the Democratic Republic of Congo was identified by the authorities as the person who lost his life after falling from a balcony in Larnaca earlier this week during an immigration service operation.
According to Cyprus Mail, the deceased was an asylum seeker whose application had been rejected and who had since been living illegally on the island.
On Thursday evening, several people held a memorial gathering for the man at the same building where the tragic incident occurred. They lit candles and prayed for the deceased.
The man was one of three who jumped from a third-floor balcony during the immigration operation. He sustained severe head trauma following his fall onto the street and was rushed to Larnaca General Hospital. He died at approximately 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
The other two men who jumped managed to land on a balcony below theirs, sustaining minor injuries.
The apartment complex had previously drawn the attention of local authorities, with reports indicating that the buildings had been examined by the Larnaca Local Administration Organisation (EOA) as they were considered potentially dangerous structures.
