Next week the Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus will receive the report compiled by the Anti-Corruption Authority regarding the high-profile corruption case known as "State Mafia". The document contains the names of thirteen individuals and two law firms, whilst specifying particular offences that require criminal investigation.
The next step is expected to be the appointment of independent criminal investigators by the Cabinet. At the same time, the issue of excluding the administration of the Legal Service from the process has been raised, in order to ensure the impartiality of the investigation.
The report sparked political uproar from the moment it was made public. The allegations concern connections between political figures and business circles, with the authorities proceeding to make a detailed record of the possible violations.
The case is being closely followed by public opinion, as it involves former ministers and senior officials. The criminal phase of the investigation is expected to shed light on activities allegedly related to abuse of power and collusion.
