Government approves inclusion of Greek criminologist in investigative team on 'Mafia State'
On Wednesday, the Cabinet of Ministers gave the green light for Criminal Law Professor Ilias Anagnostopoulos to join the team of independent investigators examining the scandal exposed by Makarios Drousiotis's book. The Greek criminologist is replacing Christos Mylonopoulos, who resigned from the committee in recent days.
In statements at the Presidential Palace, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotes said that Mr Anagnostopoulos and his colleagues are expected to travel to Cyprus early next week. They will begin examining the findings prepared by the Anti-Corruption Authority.
Cabinet members also approved the provision of full support to the investigators. A suitable office with the necessary equipment has already been found, and support staff will be allocated for administrative duties.
Mr Letymbiotes responded to criticism heard regarding the selection of Mr Anagnostopoulos, emphasising that these concerns are not related to the investigative team's terms of reference. He also clarified that the incident with the black van was not examined by the Anti-Corruption Authority and is not included in the material that the investigators will receive.
The government spokesperson called on everyone to allow the team to complete its work without interference, to study the findings thoroughly, and to examine all matters referred to in it.
