Anti-corruption authority: Possible criminal liability for Anastasiades over abuse of power
The anti-corruption authority concluded on Tuesday that former president Nicos Anastasiades and other individuals may bear criminal liability, following completion of an investigation into allegations contained in the book Mafia State. According to the findings, Anastasiades may have committed abuses of power in many instances during his tenure.
The book was written by journalist Makarios Drousiotis, who was formerly an adviser to the former president.
As reported by Cyprus Mail, current president Nicos Christodoulides commented on Tuesday afternoon following publication of the findings. "Our government is fully committed to transparency, accountability and the need to strengthen citizens' confidence in institutions," he stated characteristically.
Christodoulides reiterated that he expects the findings to be communicated to the Law Office, after which the government will proceed with the next steps. "We will always do what is necessary within the constitution and current legislation for a full investigation of the case," he said, addressing the Cypriot people.
