The Government committed itself today to preparing a bill that would give the Anti-Corruption Authority the ability to appoint criminal investigators. The announcement was made by the head of the Ministry of Justice to Parliament.
The Authority, since it began operations, has received 849 complaints. Of these, 580 have been completed, but criminal investigations and charges have been initiated for only 17.
Commissioner for Transparency Haris Pogiatzes stated that 35 per cent of reports are signed, whilst many citizens are reluctant to reveal their identity. He argued that the Authority should be able to appoint investigators when it identifies criminal acts, in accordance with AKEL's proposal.
Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides called for substantive discussion within a short timeframe, with the aim of a comprehensive bill. He proposed amending article 9 so that investigations close more quickly without compromising impartiality.
Parliament decided to return to the matter in October.
