An unknown person managed to withdraw money from a woman by persuading her to install two applications on her smartphone, claiming that there were suspicious transactions on her bank account.

The Nicosia Crime Investigation Department is investigating a case in which an unknown person managed to obtain approximately €600 from a woman following a telephone call in which he falsely informed her that strange movements had been detected on her bank account. The news is reported by Philenews.
The report was filed on 17 June 2026. The victim received a call on her smartphone from someone she did not know. The unknown person informed her that strange activities had been observed on her account.
The fraudster instructed her to download a specific application on her mobile phone, telling her that in this way she would be able to check the movements of her device. The woman complied.
Subsequently, the perpetrator convinced her to proceed with the installation of a second programme. Through this, the victim carried out a money transfer to a person she did not know. Additionally, she received a request from her account for another transfer, this time to an account linked to the programme she had just installed, which was executed.
At a later stage, the woman realised that she had fallen victim to fraud. The total amount of money withdrawn from her reached approximately €600.
The authorities are sounding the alarm to the public, emphasising the need for caution with calls, messages or online contacts from strangers requesting banking or personal data. Citizens are urged to avoid opening links from unknown sources and to contact their bank directly to verify any suspicious communication.
