Heightened concern has been caused in Cyprus by increased reports from citizens of attempted fraud via telephone calls. Cypriot authorities have received numerous complaints according to which unknown individuals call citizens and impersonate employees of electronic payment companies or other organisations.
The individuals carrying out the calls use numbers with Cypriot or other prefixes. Using an automated mechanism, they ask the recipient to press specific keys on their device, claiming that this is a verification or approval procedure for some purported financial transaction.
The real purpose is to deceive citizens into approving fraudulent transactions or payments that have not been carried out. Police clarify that these calls are entirely fake and do not originate from legitimate organisations.
The authorities advise citizens to be particularly careful. In the event that they are waiting for an online transaction to be completed, they are urged not to follow instructions from such suspicious communications. Verification of any request should be carried out only through official and recognised communication channels of the organisations concerned.
