Cyprus: Team of investigators takes on corruption scandal inquiry
A Cabinet session in Cyprus today is expected to approve the appointment of independent criminal investigators. These will examine the conclusions that emerged from the investigation of the Anti-Corruption Authority, known as the "Mafia State" case. The decision will determine the terms of reference for the investigators and the timetable for completing the inquiry.
According to a report in the newspaper Politis, at least five to six criminal investigators will staff the team. One of them will lead the criminal investigation. The investigators will divide up the various chapters of the case after first studying the multi-page report — approximately three thousand pages — drafted by officials of the Anti-Corruption Authority.
The report names fifteen natural and legal persons who may be involved in criminal offences. Despite initial reactions regarding conflicts of interest that President Christodoulides faced when approaching the first lawyers, the composition of the team was finalised and includes foreign lawyers.
The Cabinet may also decide on the appointment of a public prosecutor for the case, in the event that it comes before the judicial authorities.
