Hundreds of packets of illicit tobacco products were found on Wednesday in a trailer located in a public space in Ayia Napa, according to a statement issued by the Customs Department and police on Thursday. According to Cyprus Mail, the vehicle's owner was absent during the operation and has not been located so far.
Since the owner did not respond, the Customs Department proceeded to break open the trailer's lock in the presence of Ayia Napa mayor Christos Zannetos.
The seized products include 406 boxes of cigarettes with 200 pieces each, 64 boxes containing 100 cigarillos each, 40 boxes of heated cigarettes with 200 pieces, as well as hundreds of packets of hookah tobacco and hand-rolling tobacco.
The products were classified as illicit because they did not carry the mandatory warning notices in Greek and Turkish about the dangers of smoking, and lacked the standard unique traceability code for security purposes, according to the Customs Department.
The investigation is ongoing. An immediate priority is the identification and location of the owner "based on forensic analysis of fingerprints and DNA samples" collected from the seized products, the department stated.
