A tragic incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 30 June 2026 in the Zakaki area of Limassol. A man aged 55, who was serving with the Harbour Police, used his service pistol against his 46-year-old wife, before turning the weapon on himself.
The incident took place shortly before 7 in the morning, outside a school. According to accounts published by the newspaper Politis, the couple had arrived at the location in separate vehicles and an intense argument ensued.
A passing motorist who heard voices returned and saw the man grabbing the woman by the neck. When he intervened, the 55-year-old stopped him, telling him that this was his wife. The woman, according to the account, could not speak and made gestures seeking help. Immediately afterwards, the harbour police officer shot his wife and then shot himself.
The Police were notified at 6:45. Police officers and an ambulance arrived at the scene, where they established that the man was dead. The injured woman was transported urgently to Limassol General Hospital, where she underwent surgery and remains on a ventilator with very serious injuries.
The head of Limassol Police, Stelios Aristeidou, stated that the perpetrator reported for duty at 6:07 in the morning and collected his service weapon. The authorities are investigating the exact circumstances of the meeting, whilst reports indicate that the couple may have been facing financial difficulties. The two each had one child from previous marriages. The Social Welfare Services were notified regarding the minor children.
