A woman with Lithuanian nationality, who is accused of unlawfully occupying Greek Cypriot properties in the occupied territories, was arrested last May in France. The arrest was made on the basis of a European arrest warrant issued by the Cypriot authorities.
In early July, a court in the city of Aix-en-Provence approved the request of the Republic of Cyprus for the extradition of the accused. The decision provoked reactions from political figures in the occupied territories.
Tufan Erhiurman, representative of Ankara in the region, and Sila Usar Incirli, leader of the Republican Turkish Party, expressed protests. Their statements argued that the occupation administration has the right to exploit and sell properties belonging to Greek Cypriots.
Incirli argued that the use of the European arrest warrant by the Greek Cypriot side does not aim at the administration of justice, but uses legislation for political purposes.
Ünal Üstel, leader of the breakaway entity, stated that this development exploits European law for political objectives. He warned that there would be a reaction and characterised the move as interference in the economic life and legal order of the territory that it controls.
The government of the Republic of Cyprus continues its policy of prosecuting individuals who unlawfully exploit properties of displaced Greek Cypriots.
